Changing Unix index from "os"

Are there any issues I should be aware of before change the index of our unix systems? I'd like to change it from the default "os" to "unix", but wanted to make sure I won't be causing any other issues with other apps.

Hi @deyo

It is very common that customers change the index used for their OS monitoring. It shouldn't cause too many issues except with any existing dashboards, searches, reports, ITSI that you have. Use @woodcock 's bash command to find out where you might have searches that explicitly mention the old index name.

Cheers

Run this search on your search head:

find /opt/splunk/etc/ -type f -exec egrep -l "index=os|index = os|index=\"os\"|index = \"os\"" {} \;

@woodcock

find /opt/splunk/etc/ -type f -exec egrep -l "index=os|index = os|index=\"os\"|index = \"os\"" {} \;

I tried the above with no results.

Just to make sure this was not a false negative, I ran it again replacing "os" with "main".

find /opt/splunk/etc/ -type f -exec egrep -l "index=main|index = main|index=\"main\"|index = \"main\"" {} \;

Same thing. No results.

I'm probably not understanding something. Your help is appreciated.

Thanks and God bless,
Genesius

I guess what I'm asking is if changing the default index for unix boxes, "os", will cause me any headaches down the line. Other apps that would be searching for unix systems using the "os" index.

And my answer is: it is impossible to know and why bother guessing? Just go look!
