Use Disk Monitor to detect hard-drive failures before they occur. This app reads the data from the self-monitoring technology (also known as S.M.A.R.T. ) built into most drives in order to alert you when a drive appears to be failing. The app is designed to be easily installed. On Windows, the app will collect hard-drive immediately with no additional configuration necessary (Unix requires the installation of smartctl from http://smartmontools.org).
