Saving the top value of a search to use in a separate search.

I am trying to save the top 1 value of a field from a search to a variable. I then want to use this value to input into a separate search.

There are several approaches to this.
Can you share samples of both queries, so members can suggest the most appropriate solution?
Do you want to run these queries "at (almost) the same time", or are you looking to run the first search once an hour/day/week etc and the second more frequently?
