Regarding SavedSearch to use as a base query

Hi There,
I am new to Splunk. I need to use savedsearch as a base search to append the query from savedsearch to another query in table, chart etc. in the Dashboard.

Also I wanted to know Is it possible to pass selection value from dashboard input field to savedsearch? I mean to say can I use filter like $filter$ in savedsearch so that on selection of DropDown value in DashBoard so base query will also gets changed by filter value?

If possible provide me best documents on savedsearch or basesearch and its application.
