Generate PDF from a dashbord throws '[Errno 2] No such file or directory' exception error for graph panels

Hi,

I have a dashboard panel that contains graphs (column), when I click on 'Generate PDF', it throws out the error.

Interesting is when I edit the visualization, and change the view from Column to Table, then the 'Generate PDF' works without problems.

wazimu# tail -n3 python.log

2012-12-18 15:02:21,269 +0300 INFO pdfgen_endpoint:308 - pdf time-of-report=1355832141.27

2012-12-18 15:02:21,508 +0300 ERROR pdfgen_endpoint:173 - Exception raised while trying to prepare "TEST" for rendering to PDF. [Errno 2] No such file or directory

2012-12-18 15:02:21,509 +0300 ERROR pdfgen_endpoint:179 - No views prepared without exceptions. Bailing out of PDF render.

Please help in fixing the PDF in rending graphs. Thanks.

Hi sorry for the late reply. Im running Splunk version 5.0.1, build 143156 on FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE (i386). Link hostname contains the correct DNS entry, resolvable from the internet + local machine.

Problem still persists...

Normally when you see this error it means whichever hostname they put in for the link hostname, it wasn't resolvable. Check for the following:

  1. a typo under Manager » System settings » Email alert settings » Link hostname

  2. an issue with the dns setup not being set up properly on this machine that the app is installed on.

Nah, DNS seems to be correctly setup, problem still there. Thanks.

Yup, I understand the differences. I was just pointing out that I think the original question is about integrated PDF generation, and your answer is about the PDF Report Server app. I noticed that the person who accepted your answer was not one of the people who asked the question, so I think there's still a possibility we haven't answered the original posting, unless it's the OS issue that jlaw pointed out.

This is pertaining to the PDF generation not completing. If this is simple XML report than the Integrated PDF is fine however, if this is an advance XML report than the PDF App is required on Linux.

This comment pertains to the PDF Report Server App, correct? Is the question about the app, or integrated PDF generation in Splunk 5?

Which OS are you using? Integrated PDF Generation is not supported on as many platforms as Splunk in general (for example, AIX). Here are the system requirements for Integrated PDF Generation on Splunk 5.0:

Edited to add:

I think you're running into a known issue that got fixed for 5.0.2 (http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/5.0/ReleaseNotes/KnownIssues#Integrated_PDF_generation_i... ).

It's SPL-56049. On nonsupported platforms, Splunk isn't supposed to try using integrated PDF gen. (Looks like FreeBSD 8.0 isn't supported, just 6.1 & 6.2. The requirement here might be node.js, or it might be something else, I'm not sure.)

Since you're using Linux (madchowchow), you should be able to use the PDF Report Server app from Splunkbase. Because of SPL-56049, though, I don't think Splunk will call Report Server unless you have Flash or Advanced XML (both of which are not supported in integrated PDF gen). This is not a recommendation to convert your dashboards into Flash or Advanced XML! 🙂 But I think you'll have to upgrade to 5.0.2 to get the bugfix that makes Splunk call the Report Server app on nonsupported platforms.
