Hello Everyone,

I am new to base search and need some help from you.

The query is taking a while, I would like to create base search to load faster.

Basically, I want to count error data 200 and 400 by hosts, action and referer_domain. Below is the xml.

Can you help me?

Hi

in your case you must remember this:

---8<--

Event retention
If the base search is a non-transforming search, the Splunk platform retains only the first 500,000 events that it returns. A post-process search does not process events in excess of this 500,000 event limit, silently ignoring them. This can generate incomplete data for the post-process search.

This search result retention limit matches the max_count setting in limits.conf. The setting defaults to 500,000.

--8<--

If you have active web site you must use transforming search as base no way to use as "index=web ..." FOr that reason you must check can you combine those which you have:

index=web source="access.log" "GET" | stats count by host
index=web source="access.log" status=200 | stats count by action
index=web  status=200 | stats  count by referer_domain
index=web source="access.log" "POST" | stats count by host
index=web source="access.log" status=400 | stats count by action
index=web  status=400 | stats  count by referer_domain

 You could do it easily for those status=...

index=web source="access.log" "GET" | stats count by host
index=web source="access.log" "POST" | stats count by host
=>
index=web source="access.log" method IN ("GET","POST")| stats count by host, method

index=web source="access.log" status=200 | stats count by action
index=web source="access.log" status=400 | stats count by action
=>
index=web source="access.log" status IN(200,400) | stats count by action, status

index=web  status=200 | stats  count by referer_domain
index=web  status=400 | stats  count by referer_domain
=>
index=web status IN (200,400) | stats count by referer_domain, status

(if I recall right method is field where GET/POST/... is, please check and fix if needed)

This drop your searches from 6 to 3 and probably you could combine those more?

After that define to your dashboard (simplexml) e.g. for the 3rd query (and same for others, just add additional basequeries, if you couldnt' combine those and if you could then less basequeries is needed)

  <search id="baseSearch1">
    <query>
      index=web status IN (200,400) | stats count by referer_domain, status
    </query>
  </search>

....
        <search base="baseSearch1">
          <query>
            | where status = 200
          </query>
        </search>
....
        <search base="baseSearch1">
          <query>
            | where status = 400
          </query>
        </search>

More about these can found e.g.

I hope that these examples helps you to optimize your dashboard.
