Do Deployment Servers have to belong to a site?

in a multi site on premise Splunk version 9.0.0 environment if we have two sites do we have to designate a site value on our two Deployment servers

[general]
serverName = DeploymentServer1
pass4SymmKey = $1$OtE23lksSRVW123jaPEzeaoq
site=FirstSite

@Gregski11 - the site doesn't affect the deployment server and client communication. Here is why:

  • For the Indexer cluster, the site configuration makes sense because the forwarder will decide where to send data. Because forwarder can send data to multiple indexers in load balanced or cloned manner at a time.
  • But for the deployment server, it does not make sense, because the forwarder can connect to only one Deployment server at a time.
  • Instance as a Forwarder:
    • Based on recommendation your deployment server should send data to indexers. In this case, as a data forwarder, it can have an impact on site value for where the instance is sending _internal logs.
    • But it has nothing to do with forwarder management (deployment server)

I hope this answers your question.
