Can I use an FTP client to download splunk?

wget is your friend.

wget 'http://www.splunk.com/index.php/download_track?file=4.1.6/<os>/<file name>&wget=true&name=wget&typed=releases'

...where "os" is one of windows, linux, bsd, osx, solaris, aix or hpux.
