What will be the final 6.x.x release prior to 7.0?

What will be the final 6.x.x release prior to 7.0? All of our servers are at 5.0.1 right now. At some point we'll upgrade our Search and Index servers, but we likely would not upgrade all of our Forwarders at the same time, as we have multiple large distributed environments with many Forwarders. The Splunk documentation says that 6.x Indexers are compatible with 5.x Forwarders. My thinking is that we would upgrade the Search and Index servers to the final 6.x.x release. This would maintain compatibility with the Forwarders until we had the time to get them all upgraded to that same 6.x.x release.

I'm aware that 6.2 just came out, and it's been about a year since the last major release. We could upgrade our Search and Index servers to 6.2, but I'd prefer not to do that if there are more 6.x.x (minor or maintenance) releases planned. Splunk maintenance is non-trivial for our environments, so we are unable to upgrade for every Splunk release that comes along. When we do finally upgrade, it would be helpful to know that we are at least upgrading to the final 6.x.x release. We of course would know the final 6.x.x release once Splunk 7.0 comes along. However, it would be too late to wait until that time, since anything that is still at 5.0.1 would be two major releases behind at that point, which may no longer be supported.

So... What will be the final 6.x.x release prior to 7.0?

On a related note, a publicized Splunk road map would really be useful to answer questions like this. I've read other comments indicating that this used to exist. Any chance this could be brought back?

Thanks.

although i can tell you that there will definitely be more releases on the 6.x.x train, this is not a question we can answer in this forum. you should discuss this plan with your sales team and plan out your upgrade strategy with them.

6.5.5 seems to be analogous to 7.0; And 7.0.1 (not yet released as of this writing) will have all the bugfixes from 6.5.6 according to this document:

Thanks, piebob. I'm not sure who our sales team is, but I'll try to figure that out and ask them as you suggest.
