Securely store API key for modular input app?

Hello all,

I'm writing my first Modular Input app, and I'm wondering what's the best way to store a REST API key for my python script? I've seen mention that the key can be stored within splunk and retrieved by the script, but no solid explanation on how to do that.

Can anyone provide a secure method?

Thank you
