How can I display a value in a Splunk+Django web app?

I created a simple django-based web app using the web toolkit, and could display a chart , a table, use tokens for pulldown etc.
Now I'd like to do something which is conceptually much simpler i.e. display a value which is the result of running a search, and piping the results to stats avg(variable). How do I go about doing that?

here the search returns a value and the custom template just generates some HTML content based on the search returned value.
