master node and Peer node on same server?

can Master Node and Peer node be on same System?

Can we have Master Node and Peer Node on same one system, and other system just peer node>?

Or in other words can Master node index data?

Strangely enough though, when I set up my test servers with a requirement for 2 search heads, but only actually registered one, it shows TWO search heads, the one I registered, and the master node.
