Installing a newer version of index server

Is it possible to have the latest version of index server that will work with 4.2.4 search head? We are planning upgrade everything, but meanwhile I have to install another index server before the upgrade...

We have always been advised by Splunk to keep the Indexers and Search Heads on the same version. Various different people from Splunk have mentioned this at different times to us.
