Does splunk currently support object based storage for indexes?

Not at the moment, at least, not without something to abstract a hierarchical filesystem in front of it.
Most object filesystems will fail Splunk's file locktest.

You can use things like amazon S3 for storage of frozen/archived splunk data, but not for the live indexes.
