Can .rbsentinel files w/o a corresponding directory be safely removed?

I understand that those files are part of a locking mechanism in the coldstorage.

To de-fluff our directories I want to get rid of the stale ones.

Is it safe to delete them after checking that there is no corresponding directory present, i.e. no directory named like the .rbsentinel file minus a leading dot and the appendix?

My understanding is that those are not really needed on linux. You could found couple of answers about this e.g. https://community.splunk.com/t5/Monitoring-Splunk/BucketMover-freeze-candidate-BUCKET-NAME-is-alread...

Actually that answers shows that time by time those are even causing issues on your environment.
