....
then i get:
"StartTag: invalid element name" with an unexpected "<"
How could i fix this?

The way to reference the less than sign inside of XML is & l t ; without the spaces between.

You also have the option to wrap it in a CDATA tag:

<![CDATA[xxx afield<$value$]]>

= is not a special charactor, so & l t ;= should work.

& a m p ; & ampersand
& a po s ; ' apostrophe
& q u o t ; " quotation mark
