HTML Dashboard: Why is search not submitting using map tokens via SplunkJS?

I'm writing an HTML Dashboard via SplunkJS that leverages the map command. This entails using $tokens$ inside of the search, and when I do that, the search will never submit, with LastError = "Search is waiting for input." I've tried numerous variants of escaping the $ so that SplunkJS will submit the job, but to no avail. Can anyone offer the trick for this?

Hi, have you already used the token safe syntax?

Here are some examples:

I somehow hadn't found this page, though clearly I should have. Thank you, Tom!
