Can AppDynamics be used to monitor batch transactions which may take hours?

Or is their a max transaction time after which the transaction would not report?

Yes, we can use appdynamics monitor batch jobs/background tasks

Appdynamics categorizes transactions as two types as follows:
- user transactions - a user/business transaction which is taking more than 6 times the stall threshold (default stall threshold is 45 secs set under configure -> slow transaction threshold screen)  then the transaction will be aborted after around 270 secs,

- background tasks - user transactions marked as background tasks or the background tasks(transaction/class execution job quartz, java timer etc) are expected to be monitored for long time
