Splunk Add-on for VMware: Is installation of Splunk OVA for VMware optional or required?

We are planning to install Splunk Add-on for VMware. Do we have to install the Splunk OVA for VMware also or is that optional?

VMWare OVA is used to create DCN. You can create DCN manually also (without OVA).
