We're gearing up to install the Splunk app for SQL Server on our Production databases, and a question has come up about whether the app will work with PowerShell 4, rather than 3.
The documentation explicitly states:
"The Splunk Add-on for PowerShell
requires the .NET Framework 4.5 and
PowerShell 3.0 to be installed on the
host executing the modular input."
Does this mean that only 3.0 will work, or since 4.0 is backwards-compatible, will it work? To that end, will the latest release, PowerShell 5.0, work?
What documentation says that? The SQL app probably doesn't support it, but the Splunk Add-on for PowerShell definitely works with PowerShell 2 as well as 3, 4, and 5 😉
For what it's worth, it was actually developed on PowerShell 4, and has been tested on PowerShell 5.
The documentation for the Splunk App for Microsoft SQL Server says that, in the section that lists the pre-reqs for the SQL app.
Good to know! I should've looked at the documentation for the PowerShell app.
Yes, it should be fine. If it isn't, we will address that ASAP. We have a few engineers who are very knowledgeable about PowerShell around here. Let me know if you find otherwise, and I'll ask the lab as well just to be sure.
Now operating system or product versions could be a different matter.
