We have Splunk licensed version 6.2. Can Splunk monitor web sites to check the site is up or down and send alerts? Also, do we need to install an additional app for this? What reporting feature is available for site monitoring?
I think the Website Monitoring app is what you need. The app provides a user interface for specifying sites that you want to monitor. It will report on site outages and can create alerts in Splunk indicating that a site is down or too slow (see the wiki article at LukeMurphey.net for details on setting up Splunk to send email alerts).
That just might be the answer you were looking for 😛 but hopefully the author of that app @LukeMurphey will come by this post and go into more detail for you.
