search head version compatibility

Hi,

We have a indexer cluster running on 6.5.3 and a search head running on same version,.

We want to install a independent search head that is running on 7.3.0 and connect it to the indexer cluster.

Will that cause any issues ?

Thanks

can we degrade and create the splunk search head from 7.x to 6.x even if we have index server is 7.x?

Hi

The documentation for Indexer clusters states the following:

Compatibility between peer nodes and search heads
Starting with 6.3, the peer nodes and search heads can run different versions from each other.
The search heads must run the same or a later version from the peer nodes.
https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/7.3.0/Indexer/Systemrequirements#Compatibility_between_...

You should check this link also.

Hope it helps.

Yes, I have gone through that link.

It is unclear if the search peers are individual or a part of a indexer cluster .?

https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/7.3.0/Indexer/Systemrequirements#Splunk_Enterprise_vers...

It states :

The master node must run the same or a later version from the peer nodes and search heads.

Does it cause any impact. I understand that search heads can run on a different or a higher version of indexers.

Hi

We have some topologies running with many independent Search Heads with diffrent and greater versions than the Indexer Cluster that they are connected to and have experienced no impact whatsoever.

It should not cause any problem as far as you have you Independent Search Head with version 7.3.0 and the Search Peers (Indexer cluster) with version 6.5.3.

Hope it helps.
