Agree that the current behavior makes no sense. We are seeing the same issue in the VMware App. Our scripted input's child process doesn't get shut down when Splunkd shuts down and the /bin/sh exits. We have found that it only happens on Ubuntu - i.e. it is fine on CentOS - so we're going to file it as a bug.

The wiki page link you provided is actually for a very old proof of concept VMware component for use in Splunk 3.x posted back in 2008. It was deprecated and taken down from Splunkbase long ago. The wiki page should have been removed as well. A next-gen Splunk for VMware Solution is currently under development. The posts about it being released in Fall 2010 are incorrect. We have not publicly announced release dates, so unfortunately we cannot provide you with specifics at this time. The best I can do is recommend that you check back with us in a few months. In the meantime, we are planning to provide some documentation on how to Splunk a VMware environment without the Solution. The first version of that document should be coming out within the next month. Hope that helps.

The WAS App requires you to run the setup web page via SplunkWeb because that page generates the wsadmincommands.conf file. Did actually run the setup web page (i.e. fill in details and click save)? You can try re-running the setup page from the Apps page in manager. If you did re-run setup, and it still didn't work, please provide some repro steps with more detail (i.e. exactly what steps you tried, which version of Splunk you're running, etc.)?

The WAS App requires you to run configure it via the setup page when it is first installed. You can also re-run the setup from the manager page. Did you run the GUI setup? Can you provide some repro steps?

I'm not quite sure I understand this description. What do you mean by "you have to start over from the beginning"? Can you provide some repro steps?

Hi all, Is there a way to "nice" a scripted input process so that it doesn't swamp the CPU? I have a scripted input on a LWF that is fairly CPU intensive if you just let it run. I'd like to "nice" it down to a level where it doesn't swamp the CPU. The script doesn't need to run in a certain amount of time, so just nicing it down should be ok. I'm open to other approaches as well if people have solved this a different way. It would also be good to know how to do this on a Windows machine as well. Thanks, Curt

A question for our Splunk for VMware Alpha Program customers... What have you found useful in Splunk for VMware data? If you’ve installed the Splunk for VMware App alpha release, it would be good to know what you’ve found useful. The app provides access to a ton of data that few VMware admins have been able to see before, and I’m trying to collect specific examples of what’s most useful. These may be specific log messages that indicate particular issues, specific searches that you find provide useful correlations, or reports that you’ve built to show useful trends or metrics.
