We are utilizing Splunk Ingest actions to copy data to an S3 bucket. After reviewing various articles and conducting some tests, I've successfully forwarded data to the S3 bucket, where it's currently being stored with the Sourcetype name. However, there's a requirement to store these logs using the hostname instead of the Sourcetype for improved visibility and operational efficiency. Although there isn't a direct method to accomplish this through the Ingest actions GUI, I believe it can be achieved using props and transforms. Can someone assist me with this?

We have deployed splunk enterprise on huawei cloud. After conducting baseline checking, we have discovered several risk items targeting mongodb with the following: Rule:Use a Secure TLS Version Rule:Disable Listening on the Unix Socket Rule:Set the Background Startup Mode Rule:Disable the HTTP Status Interface Rule:Configure bind_ip Rule:Disable Internal Command Test Rule:Do Not Omit Server Name Verification Rule:Enable the Log Appending Mode Rule:Restrict the Permission on the Home Directory of MongoDB Rule:Restrict the Permission on the Bin Directory of MongoDB Rule:Check the FIPS Mode Option I have checked if there is any related documentation but I cannot find any of them. I am wondering if I should create a mongodb.conf for it. Thanksss

Hi, I have an app that is used for all the configurations that we have in Splunk Cloud. Quite a lot of users on our instance are admin (for good reasons that I don't want to get into ). Now because not all of those users are really "developer enthusiasts" they tend to sometimes make configuration changes through the GUI. For example disable a search in the GUI instead of nicely in the app (with pipeline etc) when they don't need it anymore. To try to make this impossible I changed the default.meta to:     [] access = read : [ * ], write : [] export = system   But this doesn't seem to work and people can still disable savedsearches (and many other things). Is there any way to disable write entirely for any content in the app?

Hi folks I am trying to schedule a dashboard to send mail with its details periodically, I can able to do it but the output is not that legible i.e the attachment either .pdf or .pmg format is blurry when zoomed in at slightest to view the readable things like table data, graph points and so on. the Dashboard contains multiple panel like table, bar graph, pie chat and different kinds of graph as well. does increasing font size of the data helps? I dont want to alter the dashboard and make a mess unless it will surely solve the matter.  I am not very good at dashboarding and new to Splunk as well.  Please advise

I am sending syslog data to Splunk from Cisco FMC. I am using UCAPL compliance and therefore cannot use eStreamer. The data is being ingested into Splunk and the dashboard is showing some basic events, like connection events, volume file events and malware events. When I try to learn more about these events it doesn't drill down into more info. For example, when I click on the 14 Malware Events and chose open in search it just shows the number of events. There is no information regarding these events. When I click on inspect, it shows command.tstats at13 and  command.tstats.execute_output at 1. It doesn't provide further clarity regarding the malware events. When I view the Malware files dashboard on the FMC, is shows no data for malware threats. So based on the FMC it seems that the data in the Splunk dashboard is incorrect or at least interpreting malware events differently from the FMC dashboard.

I am posting this to maybe save you from few hours of troubleshooting like I did. I did clean install of Splunk 9.4 in small customer environment with virtualized AIO instance. After the installation there was an error notifying that KV Store can not start and that mongo log should be checked. The following error was logged:   ERROR KVStoreConfigurationProvider [4755 KVStoreConfigurationThread] - Could not start mongo instance. Initialization failed.     Mongod.log was completely empty.  So there was no clues in the log files about what is wrong and what can I do to make KVStore operational. Time to start Googling. Solution will be posted in the next post.

Step-by-Step Guide to Migrating AppDynamics Analytics Data to Harmonized Schemas Reason to migrate: This migration pertains exclusively to the analytics data captured and stored on the AppDynamics controller, which has a maximum capacity of 20 schemas. To overcome this limitation, we have reengineered the approach to schema utilization, enabling additional capacity for customers to define their own schemas. Starting with agent version 24.11, this updated approach (called Harmonized) is the sole available option for new installations. However, for customers who are updating to this version, this document will walk them through the process as they should plan to migrate ASAP. Please note that any metrics migrated will begin reporting from the new location, and all historical analytics data associated with those metrics will be lost. Clean out old data Log into each SAP system (as these schemas are shared) Disable analytics via t-code /DVD/APPD_CUST, then enter Edit Mode Uncheck the analytics events API box Save changes Click the status button or run t-code /DVD/APPD_STATUS Click event service Then click Custom Analytics schema As stated before, the max number of schemas a controller can have is 20. Here is a list of the ones that are used going forward related to SAP: sap_log_data sap_workload_data sap_analytics_data_1 sap_idoc_data sap_biq_documents sap_hana_data (if a HANA DB is used) sap_bw_data (if it is a BW system) sap_pi_data (if it is a PI system) sap_custom_data_1 (custom) For the complete list use this Link, which also shows how they will be mapped Given that standard schemas will be created, it is important to ensure sufficient capacity for their inclusion. This decision will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but there are essentially two strategies to consider. Option 1:  Start fresh by removing all existing schemas. The necessary schemas will be recreated upon restart. Please note that this approach will result in the loss of all historical data stored on the controller, not just the analytics data that is relocated. In t-code /DVD/APPD_STATUS Click the Debug Mode Check both boxes and select the desired time duration Delete the ones you want or all of them for a fresh start Once all changes are made click the Debug Mode button again to exit debug mode (or wait for the duration to expire) Option 2: Start by just removing the schemas that are marked with the status “Not Used”. Do this by clicking the trash icon on the same row Then confirm the deletion (by clicking 'No' button) Flipping the switch: After deleting all unused schemas and verifying you have enough room go back to the t-code /DVD/APPD_CUST Enter change mode In the Analytics events API settings area, set Version to "Harmonized" and check the box for “Analytics events API is active” Verify Schemas: Once all the changes are made and running for a few hours, your end result could look like this. You can see which systems are using the different schemas by clicking the corresponding Used button Adjusting Dashboards to new schemas Any dashboard that has analytical data may have been impacted. You will need to go into each data field and modify the query like the following Replace the old (legacy) schema name with the new (harmonized) schema name in the FROM part of the query string. Add an extra WHERE condition AND sapSchema = <old schema name>. Example query change: Legacy query SELECT * FROM idocs_details WHERE SID = "ED2" Migrated query SELECT * FROM sap_idoc_data WHERE SID = "ED2" AND sapSchema = "idocs_details" Additional Resources Troubleshooting

Basic idea:  the subsearch first derives the top 10 of the elements based on the number of yesterdays error messages.  based on the subsearch result then the 7 day history is read and displayed (not fully shown in the example above) All works fine except if there are no messages found by the subsearch. If yesterday no error messages of the given type were recorded, the subsearch returns a result which causes the following error message in the dashboard: Error in ´where´command: The expression is malformed. An unexpected character is reached at ´)´.  The where command is the one which should take the result of the subsearch (3rd line of code).  The error message is just not nice for the end user, better would be to get just an empty chart if no data is found.  The question is: How to fix the result of the subsearch in a way, that also the main search runs and gets the proper empty result, and therefore the empty graph instead of the "not nice" error message? Thank you for your help.

I'm trying to create a search in which the following should be done:  - look for a user creation process (ID 4720) - and then look (for the same user) if there is a follow up group adding event (4728) for privileged groups like (512,516 etc.)    my SPL was so far like that:    index=lalala source=lalala EventID=4720 OR 4728 PrimaryGroupId IN (512,516,517,518,519)   BUT that way I only look for either a user creation OR a user being added as a privileged user. but I want to like both. I understand that I need to somehow connect those two searches but I don't know how exactly.

We’re excited to share an update to our instructor-led training program that enhances the learning experience for Splunk learners. Starting January 1, 2025, the completion criteria for many of our Instructor-led courses will shift from lab grading to a focus on participation and knowledge comprehension. This change simplifies the learning process, aligns with industry best practices, and fosters a more engaging environment for learners. For those new to Splunk’s instructor-led training, this update will feel seamless, as it reflects the standard structure of our courses moving forward. Updated completion criteria Class Attendance: Learners must attend all scheduled class sessions. Knowledge Check Quiz: A short, open-note quiz will assess understanding. Learners must achieve an 80% passing score and will have up to 10 attempts. These quizzes are designed to support learning and are not certification exams. Lab Engagement (Optional): Labs remain an integral part of the training experience but are no longer mandatory for course credit. The rationale behind the new completion criteria  By eliminating lab grading, we aim to: Simplify the training process for learners and instructors. Minimize administrative hurdles. Focus on active participation and comprehension during sessions. If you have initial questions, we encourage you to review the FAQ for more details. Thank you for being part of the Splunk learning journey! -Callie Skokos on behalf of the Splunk Education Crew
