  Got a question about file precedency in Splunk. If I have 2 indexes.conf. One in $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/system/local/indexes.conf and 2nd one in $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/search/local/indexes.conf, which one would take precedence?   Mainly, to move all the data to be frozen after one year I have configured the default section in my $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/system/local/indexes.conf  frozenTimePeriodInSecs = 31536000 But it's different for other indexes in $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/search/local/indexes.conf. So how would Splunk see it and apply?   Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi  We had UberAgent apps installed in Splunk environment and recently we deleted the apps along with the index. We see that due to index deletion , data is getting in main index from very few servers/devices. But not sure where this data is coming from since we have removed the UberAgent apps from everywhere. Any suggestions where should we be looking at to find the source? There are no related HEC tokens OR scripts that is to be found. Warm Regards !

I am running into an issues where I am attempting to import data from a SQL Server database, one of the columns is entitled message, contains  message payload with the character '{' in it.  When Splunk Process the data from DB Connect, it inappropriately truncates the message when it sees the '{' bracket in the document.  Are there solutions for overriding this line breaking feature?  We currently have to go into Raw to extract the information using RegEx to preserve the data and we would rather store this message in a Splunk Key Value Pair.

I'm trying to do a condition based action on my chart. I am getting the following error message whenever I try to login to my Splunk test environment: user=************** is unavailable because the maximum user count for this license has been exceeded.  I think this is because of a new license I recently uploaded to this box. As the old license was due to expire I recently got a new free Splunk license (10GB Splunk Developer License). I received/uploaded it to the test box on Friday, 3 days before the old one was due to expire. I then deleted the old license that day despite it having a few additional days. On Sunday (the day the old license was due to expire), I started getting this login issue. As I can't get past the login screen I can't try and reupload a different license, etc.  Any suggestions?

Hi there,  I'm looking to setup an automated email that will trigger any time a new alert comes into Incident Review in Splunk ES (using Splunk>enterprise). The idea is for the team to be notified without having the Incident Review page open and improve response time. I know I can set emails individually when a alert triggers, but this would be for every 'new' alert (there are some alerts that are autoclosing) that comes in or with an option to only target high urgency alerts based on volume.  Any advice would be appreciated!

We have a windows host that sends us stream data but suddenly stopped the stream. Upon checking the _internal logs we found that sniffer.running=false at the exact time when it stopped sending the logs. Previous to this it was true. I am trying to find out where I can set this flag to true and restart the streamfwd.exe. If this would fix the issue. Doubt is that we didn't really touched any conf file that would have changed it. Attaching the internal logs for this host for more clarity if the solution that I am thinking is not the one and something else needs to be done.   Thanks in advance for any help.

We're excited to announce that AppDynamics is transitioning our Support case handling system to Cisco Support Case Manager (SCM), enhancing your support experience with a standardized approach across all Cisco products. This migration is scheduled to take place on June 14th. As the transition date approaches, you will notice banners appearing in both the AppDynamics Admin Portal and on our help website (www.appdynamics.com/support). These banner notifications will keep you informed about the change and notify you once the transition has been completed.  Access 1-Year Historical AppDynamics Support Case Data On October 3, 2024, 1-year historical AppDynamics support case data will be accessible through Cisco Support Case Manager (SCM). This update will allow users to view all closed cases from Zendesk, dating between June 14, 2023, and June 14, 2024, directly in SCM. Please be aware that access to certain cases may be restricted to the individual who originally opened the case. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and want to assure you that Cisco is actively working to address these limitations. Temporary Work-Around  On June 14, AppDynamics transitioned to Cisco Support Case Manager (SCM) for case creation and management. Since the migration, we have become aware that some customers are experiencing difficulties accessing SCM to create/view cases. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and want to assure you that Cisco is working diligently to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.   As a temporary workaround, beginning Saturday, August 17th, users who have encountered errors when attempting to open cases will be able to bypass these errors and proceed with case creation. Please note that for cases created using this workaround, only the user who initiates the case will have access to view it in SCM. If you need to share the visibility of these cases with others in your organization, please ensure that they are included in the CC list when creating the case. Please note that visibility is restricted to email communications only for data privacy and security.  If you continue to experience issues with SCM, or if you have any other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at appd-support@cisco.com for further assistance.  What does this mean for you?  AppDynamics will notify you once your profile and support cases have been successfully migrated, allowing you to seamlessly access your support cases in SCM. Until the migration is complete, you will continue to have access to your cases through the current AppDynamics case-handling tool. Access to the new SCM platform requires that your profile is migrated to the "Cisco User Identity," a process that will be automatically handled for you. Do you have a bot or assistant to help manage cases?  Case Satisfaction Additional Resources Search for a case  To view an open or migrated case in SCM, navigate to the “Create and Manage Support cases”- view. There you type in the Case ID number (either new or old case ID) in the Search-field  and press enter (Figure 1) Figure 1 Updating a case   Go to the SCM start page, where under “Cases”, you pick “My Cases” (Figure 2) and select the case that needs updating. Here you edit your case and make sure to save the changes before exiting.  Figure 2 Upload an attachment to a case    If you need to upload and attach a file to a case, you can do so when opening a “new case”, or by going to an “existing case”. When opening a new case, you’re prompted to upload an attachment when the case has been submitted. For an existing case, navigate to the “My Cases” view as seen in Figure 6. In the right corner press the “Add File” (Figure 3) button, upload the file and save.  Figure 3 How can I request to close a case? You can close a case yourself in two different ways:  1. Manually Go to 'CASE SUMMARY' Edit Describe how the case was resolved (optional) Case status updates to "Close Pending / Customer Requested Closure" 2. With the Support Assistant From the Support Assistant type 'close the case (insert case number)' The Support Team will close the case How to reopen a closed case and validity You can reopen a closed case in two different ways: 1. Manually From Support Case Manager Check closed cases Apply filters Select the case Click reopen on the top right corner 2. With the Support Assistant  From the Support Assistant type 'reopen the case (insert case number)' A case can be reopened only for two weeks after the close date If a case is outside the two-week window, it is recommended to open a new case Case Satisfaction  After migrating to Cisco SCM, at case closure, you will be provided an industry standard 10-point scale and asked to choose a value to reflect satisfaction on the support of the case. (Figure 4) Figure 4 Is there an easy way to manage my cases? Welcome to our very first developer spotlight release series where we'll feature some awesome Splunk developers from across our Community and showcase their work. Today, we're excited to introduce Paul Stout and his amazing work behind "Duck Yeah!". Writing code since he was 8  Paul is currently a principal consultant for a Splunk Partner, SOI solutions. He's an experienced developer who has been writing code since he was about 8 on the Atari 800 and Apple IIe computers. Paul has a deep understanding of the Splunk Platform, having worked for Splunk, with Splunk customers, and with Splunk Partners. While he frequently uses Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud, he also has experience with ITSI deployments and Splunk Enterprise Security. Journey as an app developer In 2011, Paul was brought to work for Splunk to implement Splunk at Splunk – a project formerly called Splunk(x). At the time, he had never built a Splunk app or even used Python. Despite this, he was able to figure it out and successfully build an app for SalesForce. You can still find his original TA-SFDC in the Splunkbase archives bearing SalesForce's 2011 logo. From there, Paul continued building things and one of his most downloaded apps is the WebGL globe, a project he initially developed in the basement of 250 Brannan and later revived as a Splunk customer. About the Duck Yeah! app One of Paul's most iconic app developments is "Duck Yeah!", a developer tool that properly packages and vets Splunk apps for distribution through AppInspect. Since building it, Paul hasn't released a single app without passing it through "Duck Yeah!" first. He does most of his Python/JavaScript/CSS in vim, using a mix of vim and the Splunk UI for SimpleXML and other knowledge objects required for apps to function properly. "Duck Yeah!" is designed to cater to developers of varying comfort levels with command line and UI, making it easy to package an app or identify any issues, regardless of how it's built. Think of "Duck Yeah!" as a wizard that guides developers through the critical metadata for an app, then handles the heavy lifting using a combination of native Splunk tools and some custom magic. Advice for other Splunk developers: “Think of something and then build it” We asked Paul for advice he would give to someone just starting to build apps for Splunk, and his answer was: "Think of something – 'wouldn't it be cool if Splunk could do x' – and then build it. Use the tutorials, starter/samples, and Splunk Answers. Download other apps and reference how they're built (don't steal!). If an app has an open-source license, start small. Get a copy of something and make small modifications. Gradually work up to bigger changes. If you're going to do visualizations, learn how to work with Node.js and npm. But above all, have a solid understanding of what a search is in Splunk, how it stores and manipulates data, and how to use the platform in general." For the past four years, Splunk has partnered with Enterprise Strategy Group to conduct a survey that gauges the impact that Splunk has had on the careers and livelihoods of its users. This year, 500 members of our incredible Splunk community participated in our annual Career Impact Survey, confirming what we've already known since we began facilitating this report: Using Splunk, learning Splunk, and getting Splunk Certified pays off — literally! First off, we want to thank each and every one of you who took the time to participate in this year’s survey. Your perspective and insight is crucial and we are so grateful for you all! Read the full 2024 Splunk Career Impact Report here. The core takeaway from this year’s report is that despite the ever-changing and turbulent landscape that is working in tech, knowing Splunk users continue seeing career outcomes that improve markedly every single year. The survey findings made it clear that a strong command over Splunk was seen to positively influence respondents’ career direction, compensation, and opportunities for advancement. The research showed that expertise with Splunk leads to higher compensation, more portable skills, and increased career resilience. It also showed that Splunk Education resources are playing a greater role in upskilling users.
