Stuck in installing: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG after fresh install

I choose the tgz package as I do not have root permission on the host I want to run splunk on.

After bin/splunk start I can see:

The Splunk web interface is at http://my.do.main:8000

When I try to access the URL I'm redirected to the same URL with https as protocol and get the errormessage that no secure connection could be opened because the maximum length for an entry in SSL was violated. SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG

What can I do to make splunk accessible?

The exact message in english:

An error occurred during a connection to …:8000. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG
