mongod.log says

     2018-08-14T14:46:34.836Z F NETWORK The provided SSL certificate is expired or not yet valid.
I know its still valid

/opt/splunk/bin/splunk cmd openssl x509 -enddate -noout -in /opt/splunk/etc/auth/server.pem
notAfter=Sep 14 17:59:43 2020 GMT

Found the answer

Seems someone set it to use a different, non-default, cert that DID expire. Updated cert and all good. thanks!
