If the sourcetype is incorrect then the data could be onboarded incorrectly. The wrong props.conf settings will be applied to the data so timestamps could be interpreted incorrectly, fields may not be extracted, transforms will not be applied, and so on. Worse, if someone is searching for the correct sourcetype, they will be unable to find their data.
