Has anyone integrated NMEA 0183 data from a source into Splunk?

We are looking to log information off our fishing vessels into Splunk where the data is currently emitted over UDP within the vessel network. Using a Splunk forwarder I should be able to set up a UDP listener and enable the transmission to the backend Splunk service. Looking to compress the data being sent as well as generally it will be sent over Satellite.

Each NMEA event is prefixed with a '$' so it should be relatively easy to separate the events, there are numerous types of NMEA events so would be interested in how this was handled.

Also, want to log/alert access to certain geofences as there are locations we are not allowed to go, has anyone dabbled with this?

We got it setup as a PoC and the ability to capture data and store it worked well. The downside was the ability to filter and view the specific events within the "event" stream. To be honest I ran out of time to further interrogate the data and then the vessel that we had implemented it on went into dry dock for a month.

Haven't had enough time as yet to get it kicked off again, but it was looking very promising.

I work for a fishing company and the main driver for this is it to act as a repository for 'black box' information that allows us to overlay trawl or fishing events, temperature, depth etc., for us to better manage the vessel operations, provide H&S monitoring and ensure we are compliant with Maritime and fishing regulations.

Clearly collecting and being able to report all of this industry emitted information opens up more opportunities than the business currently is aware of.

@chris_barrett happy to discuss. @megazina unfortunately that is the latest on my implementation .. wish I had been able to do more.

Thanks for the reply @drawnsley ! Hope you will get a chance to play with it soon.

Sounds inspiring, my project got delayed a bit, still not there - but I will share my results once I set it up.

Hi @drawnsle,

I have developed a Technical Add-On (tentatively called TA-GNSS) that handles the NMEA 0183 sentences from a range of systems (including GPS and GLONASS). I've submitted a proposal to talk about it's development and potential use-cases at .Conf19 and was planning to release the TA during Conf.

Happy to look at a closed Beta in return for using some of your experiences with it as material for my talk.

Chris
