Attempting to change user password results in error message

I'm following the directions in the documentation (and which works for updating the administrator password). But when I attempt to change the password of another user I get Argument "password" is not supported by this handler

The actual command is

sudo $SPLUNK_HOME/bin/splunk edit user fl  -password <new password>  -role poweruser -auth admin:<admin password> && sudo  $SPLUNK_HOME/bin/splunk restart

./splunk edit user username -password changeme -role admin -auth admin:changeme

Are you sure you put the - in front of password?

The code above is exactly what I used (minus the actual passwords, of course). So yes, I did put the dash in front. I can change the admin user password without any problems. That's what's so confusing about this error.

Allright....what roles / right does the other user have?
Maybe you cannot change other users passwords with admin roles?

The other user has power user role. I would expect since you can change users' passwords via the UI as the administrator you should be able to do so from the CLI. But the error message isn't about not have permissions to do the change. It says:

Argument "password" is not supported by this handler

Which is normally an error message when you've got the wrong end point for the command. But since this works to change the administrator password and it's in the documentation as the correct command to change any user's password the error message is baffling.
