Config import/export API for Data Collectors ?

Hi all

I'm regularly using the config import/export API (https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO42/Configuration+Import+and+Export+API) to copy transaction detection rules from one application to another.

Now I've configured some Data Collectors (HTTP Request collectors) and would also like to use the API to import/export those. But I can't find any documentation about those items?

Does the API support copying those types of configuration items?

Hi Joe,

there is currently no supported means of doing this. We have raised feature requests for the expansion of the import/export API to cover all config. I know AppDynamics use an internal Java App that provides a web UI to import/export just about all config, not sure if they would be willing to provide that and if they did they certainly wouldn't offer support.

Raymond

Hi Raymond

Thanks four your information.

Yes, we are aware of that web UI. It does cover everything nicely, but being a web UI, it still contains many manual steps. So copying configs among several applications is cumbersome and error prone.

I think we will also raise some feature requests from our side to show the customer demand.

Hi Joe
There's a tool called "Config Exporter" AppDynamics can provide to you to
help achieving that but it's not publicly available.
Are you already in touch with an engineer or a sales team?
They can provide you this tool. Or open a ticket

Hi JB

Yes, our team is aware of the Config Exporter and already using it.

I still think that a UI with manual steps involved is not an appropriate tool to reliably and reproducibly promote configurations of dozens ot AppD applications from DEV->TEST->PROD. There are just too many steps involved which require too many manual settings.

The tool is certainly useful for some use cases. But IMHO a comprehensive REST API (or other API which can be automated/scripted) which covers all aspects of configuration migration is a must have for a tool like AppD.
