Splunk Kafka Connector

My Kafka server is running on a treadmill. Where do I need to place the Kafka Connector? is it in splunk server or different new VM machine?

I'm following this : https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/KafkaConnect/1.1.0/User/InstallSplunkKafkaConnect
