Splunk Add-on Builder: How to determine what is needed to use as data input parameters, when configuring modular inputs

I'm building out some data inputs in the Splunk add-on builder, and one thing that I don't understand and has never really been explained to me is the Data Input Parameter. Even the documentation still leaves me questioning things.

Can someone explain to me what Data Input Parameters are and how I know what to put in the Data Input Parameters?
