It is possible to set the path in indexes.conf to a shared location but this will not be good for Splunk's performance. Archiving frozen data onto cheaper slower storage is quite accepted but for hot and warm buckets you'll want the fastest storage you have available, local is preferred. What is it that you're trying to accomplish?
