You could go with your idea of generating a test file, say every 1 hour and monitoring it or you can also use add-ons like https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/2776/

Hi,

I am trying to monitor a network folder to check if it is still reachable. I don't care about the contents, I just want to check if it is still available.

Is there a way I can do this through Splunk?
I was considering just creating a file in one of the folders and monitoring the file?

Just looking for input from people who have perhaps done this before.

Cheers.
