I'd like to start up a local Splunk user group in Tampa and was wondering what kind of venue we should host it in and if we need to supply food/drinks. Is anyone in a local Splunk user group? How is yours set up?

Just shared your question with the current Splunk user group leaders 🙂 so hopefully you'll get some feedback soon! Cheers and good luck with getting things organized!

Hi skoelpin,

I co-organise the Auckland and Wellington groups and we ask Splunk users around the cities if they want to host it and also we ask them if they are keen to do a talk. We also provide some Pizzas and Beers - but I think this is somehow financed / sponsored by Splunk in the end.

Just kick your group off and plan the first loose meeting in a fancy place or office and let the fun start 🙂

Hope this helps ...

cheers, MuS

Yeah just go to usergroups.splunk.com and join one nearby or faraway and see how we do it.

Also I know someone who would be interested in co-leading a Tampa one.

There's a reimbursement schedule that shows how much you'll be reimbursed for snacks and drinks. It depends on how many people attend and you have to get their details like name, company name, and email address. Other than that, the reimbursement is wired to your account. In my case that costs me $15 to receive, and my group is currently so small we are always reimbursed in full.

Oh you gotta get an image of the reciept too.

Hi skoelpin -

I manage User Groups for Splunk, and we have several people interested in Tampa, so perhaps we have critical mass now to launch one there. Visit User Groups and you can sign up to be notified when it's created.

skoelpin,

Running a user group is amazing. You learn from the group. I have been running the Eastern Nebraska user group for over 3 years now. Don't worry about numbers of people attending. Getting a core group of 5 or 10 people attending is the goal. I try to introduce my group to different ways of using Splunk. I love to try to get some hands on activities during the meetings. This could be loading your first Splunk server, getting data in to Splunk, what are all of these .conf files, how to search, building reports, building dashboards, building an app, etc. I would suggest jumping on the Splunk Slack instance. You can sign up through my groups site at: www.splunk402.com/chat. Let us know any other questions you have.
