Hi everyone.
can someone please tell me what net-SNMP does? am i correct in thinking it just writes out to a logfile SNMP data a server sends to it??

basically i have to use something to trap snmp data for splunk to capture, but i really am struggling to get net-snmp setup and working, im not even sure if its running at present. the config tool says i need Perl even though i have already installed the latest version of activeperl...

can someone recommend an alternative to net-snmp that is easy to setup and configure?? if all i need is something that is able to listen to SNMP traffic being passed to it and write it to a plain txt file im sure i can get one of our developers to write something a lot simpler and easier than net-snmp.

also where would i email to ask that soemone spends more than 5 lines of text on the installation and configuration of a windows snmp LOGGER ?? seems a little half done to me.

For the benefit of Christiantoy, this isn't a question about Splunk at all.

What Net-SNMP is & what it does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net-SNMP
Where to get it: http://www.net-snmp.org/
Tutorials: http://www.net-snmp.org/wiki/index.php/Tutorials

When collected SNMP traps/walks are collected and indexed by Splunk, they are an excellent source of data that can give near real-time as well as historical insight to any SNMP-enabled device (such as servers, switches, routers, etc.). But they are just another data source that is no more difficult to bring into Splunk than any other source.
