&lt;P&gt;there are a couple of threads out there about this topic, even the splunk docs  describe it &lt;A href="https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/6.6.3/Forwarding/Setuploadbalancingd"&gt;here (forwarder load balancing)&lt;/A&gt; and &lt;A href="http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/6.6.3/Indexer/indexerdiscovery"&gt;here (indexer discovery)&lt;/A&gt;.&lt;BR /&gt;
You simply change your Universal/Heavy Forwarder's outputs.conf to one of those options.&lt;/P&gt;
