We're using Centos 5.5 64-bit, 2.6.18 kernel, with no problems. I don't think Splunk gets into system-level support.

System requirements are here: http://www.splunk.com/base/Documentation/latest/Installation/Systemrequirements and since RHEL has the right kernel version, it should work (provided other system requirements are met).

See http://answers.splunk.com/questions/11233/when-will-splunk-support-solaris-11-and-rhel-6

It may work, but we haven't tested it sufficiently to declare it supported. Once we understand what may be involved - if anything - in certifying it we will update our roadmap accordingly.

I've been running splunk on RHEL6. The web server and forwarders seem to work fine. The command line tools, however, seem to have some failed dependencies resolving libssl.so.0.9.8 and libcrypto.so.0.9.8. RHEL6 ships with openssl 1.0.0.

I've also failed to get the PDF server running on RHEL6 thus far.

Most of the CLI tools need to be run in the format:
splunk cmd <COMMAND></COMMAND>
