You should probably see if a firewall or iptables is blocking it.

Installed latest Splunk version of Linux server and trying to connect with IE using the following

http://hostname:8000

Getting the error : "Oops! Internet Explorer could not connect to http://:8000"

I am able to pint the server and the port is open on the server. Cannot telnet to the server+port combo either. Don't know what else to test.

Any help is appreciated!

If you're installing this on Windows 7 - you have to manually edit the firewall rules for ports 8000 / 8089. I submitted an ER for this a couple of days ago.

If it's linux, definitely check iptables like gkanapathy said. It took me a while to figure out why I couldn't connect..
